Miso Hungry

Yeah, I know. That’s got to be the most horrifying pun of all time. But it’s true. And it’s because I’m making these Smokey Miso Tofu sandwiches for dinner. This recipe is making the rounds. I first heard about it at Jodi’s Flickr and since I’m a vegan novice (read: I eat meat), I had to ask a million questions about nutritional yeast. I was also worried about finding liquid smoke because I’ve never seen it before in the store. I should have been more concerned with the miso, actually, since the yeast and the smoke was on the shelf but no one who worked at the grocery store had any clue what miso was! Granted, I live in a very tiny, non-miso town but I thought that due to the popularity of Asian food, we’d be able to find it.

Tonight’s Smokey Miso Tofu will have to be miso-free, as it happens. Miso disappointed! However, I cobbled together the rest of the recipe and the marinade tastes pretty good as-is. My tofu is currently being pressed by a cast iron pan in preparation. I’ll let you know how it goes. Alex will most likely hate it, but we’ve got leftovers for him to eat if that’s the case.

So, seeing as we’re not going to Kitchener this weekend, we don’t need our booked hotel room in Kitchener. Jeremy called to cancel the reservations (we were going to stay at the HoJo) but for some reason, they didn’t HAVE our reservation. This sent me into a panic because I know we reserved something on our credit card, so this launched Jeremy into a slew of embarrassing phone calls to every cheap hotel in Kitchener that began something like, “Hi, I might have a reservation at your hotel for this weekend and if I do, I’d like to cancel it.”

Well, no one had heard of us and I was upset because if we don’t cancel the reservation, we’ll get charged for something, right? Jeremy called the HoJo back and asked the clerk to check again. This time, our reservation magically showed up. What was the problem? The clerk can’t read a calendar, he was looking at the wrong dates. Which is really disturbing, because when you’re making travel reservations, the dates are kind of instrumental, no?

I wanted to complain about this so we left a message with the manager on duty, who called me back about an hour ago. I gave him my concerns about being unable to cancel our reservation at first and my worry about my card being charged due to the mistake of the clerk. All the manager had to do to make me happy was tell me that he was sorry about the misunderstanding, because my whole point in complaining was so that dumbass clerk didn’t do this to someone else. Instead, the manager blamed ME for probably not giving the clerk enough information to be able to find my reservation.

Miso pissed off.

Uso funny! You have every fight to be pissed off! Why is it so hard for some people to admit that they are in the wrong?

    People are stupid.

    How was the tofu?

Liquid smoke! Tell me more about that and how you use it.

All I could think of when I read this was “Me love you long time!”. So bad…

The number one rule of customer service is that you never, ever blame a customer for a mistake even if it is the customer’s mistake (which it’s clearly not, in your case). I’d write a letter to head office explaining why I’ll no longer be staying in their hotels in future.

I think you pretty much have to go to an Asian foods store to get miso. But you don’t use much and it keeps for a long time in the fridge if you just stick a piece of tin foil beneath the lid of the container (because they’re usually flimsy and not well sealed).

We see miso it in the refrigerated section of our grocery store, near the cheese, or any soy products, like Yves’ meat substitutes, I think. Good luck!

I think you have every right to be angry! I, too, think a letter to head office would be a good idea.

Thanks for the tips on the miso. I’ll be on the lookout for it because I definitely want to make this again, and soon!

I always say I’m going to write a letter but then I never do. Maybe this time I will.
